Scav Sign Vocabulary List
For a quick point of reference on what signs Innocence knows and how the sign looks. Periodically updated whenever they learn a new word.
Question related:
- yes (closed hand, then open, then shake slightly)
- no (open hand, then close, then shake slightly)
- [head tilt], indicates questions
- what (flat hand with palm facing up, shake side to side)
General vocabulary:
- friend (two fingers raised, cross hands so the fingers point in opposite directions horizontally; mimics karma 3)
- trade (start with friend, and then move the hands depending on the context. ME-YOU-TRADE moves hand towards self first and then the other hand towards the addressee; YOU-ME-TRADE moves hand towards addressee first and then the other hand towards the self, etc.)
- dangerous (claw hand grabs the other arm, like a lizard biting down)
- water (based on rain; smaller downwards sweep, then two circular motions)
- glow/shiny/pearl (start with fingers curled into palm (claw hand), then sweep hand sideways and open fingers. Do not use a fist)
- thank you (two fingers up, hand held horizontally, shake in front of mouth, at least twice. Repeat more times or shake faster for intensity)
- rain (sweep down with both hands in a claw formation, then spread to either side)
- want (rummaging; scratching at the ground)
- spear (closed fist, mime a stabbing motion downwards)
- big [size] (both hands open, sweep outwards to mime size)
- injure/hurt [verb] (claw hand, drag downwards with the palm facing the relevant area and a squinting expression. Can be either single hand or both hands for extra emphasis)
- hurt/pain [noun] (claw hand, shake over afflicted area)
- sorry (shake head from side to side. The more intense the head shake, the more emphatic the apology)
- greeting (wave hand at other person)follow (two fingers pointing at addressee, bend towards self and curl hand inwards several times)
- that (point at relevant object)
- tell (both hands flat, clasp palms together with fingers facing opposite directions, then spin both hands in opposite directions. Dominant hand is usually on top)
- and (clap hands together. Anywhere is fine except in front of the face; typically done in front of the chest)
- also (pinch fingers and hold them downwards, then twist wrist to bring them upwards while opening fingers)
- take (mime grabbing an object, then pull it towards self)
- like/similar/somewhat (both hands open, gently shake up and down with hands out of sync)
- scavenger [species] (air quotes, essentially. Two fingers up on both hands, slightly bent. Follow up with number after the sign if necessary to specify)
- slow (start with open hand on one side, move SLOWLY to the opposite side while closing hand)
- fast (open, flat hand, quickly slice it upwards. Usually start with hand at waist)
Enemies:
- generic/unspecified/already specified enemy (just the claw hand)
- green lizard (both hands claw, vertically stack with wrists touching so it looks like a gaping maw)
- blue lizard (put claw on the back of flat non dominant hand raised vertically, like a lizard perched on a wall)
- pink lizard (other hand raises one finger, place on top of claw. Can also just use the claw hand with no specifications if context is clear)
- vulture (fold middle fingers of non dominant hand, place on top of claw)
- overseer (dominant hand forms claw, put other hand to the elbow of the dominant arm to form a snake-like structure. Mimics how overseers look)
Emotions:
- okay/fine (two fingers, start at chest and flick outwards)
Food:
- (blue) fruit (loosened claw hand held with fingers facing up, twist wrist as if one were to twist a fruit off its stalk)
Pronouns:
- first person singular (point to self)
- second person singular (point to other person)
Grammatical Particulates:
- [polite] (nod. When used on its own, roughly translates to ‘please’)
- [poss] (pinch thumb to index and middle finger in the direction of referent. marks possession; essentially a genitive marker. Eg ‘your friend’ is signed as YOU-[poss] FRIEND)
